Facade & Building Enclosure Engineer

Job Description

The Facade & Building Enclosures Division in our North Shore Auckland office is growing, and we are currently looking for an experienced candidate with a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) or a Master of Engineering degree in a relevant engineering subject. Facade and building enclosure engineering is the application of engineering principles, physics, and materials science to the exterior envelope of buildings to make them structurally resilient, durable, energy-efficient, and able to reliably resist water infiltration. As an Engineer hire, you will assist with design, evaluation, investigation, and design of repairs for new and existing buildings. Essential duties include critical thinking, self-motivation, climbing ladders and scaffolds, the ability to work at heights, and the ability to travel by car to multiple job sites.

Job Requirements
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) or a Master of Engineering degree in Architectural, Civil, Structural, Mechanical or Fire Engineering, or Engineering Science.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience, seeking professional licensure.
  • Basic understanding of the New Zealand Building Code.
  • Commitment to lifelong learning, enthusiasm for the work, and self-motivated.
  • Ability to work and contribute in a team environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills to clearly communicate on the job.
  • Logical and practical with attention to detail.
  • Developed hand and computer drawing/drafting skills.
  • Knowledge of buildings, building systems, and design document organisation.
  • Experience in building design and/or construction and investigating building problems, which may include difficulties related to concrete, curtain walls, glazing, masonry, roofing sealants, waterproofing, wood, windows, and thermal/condensation issues.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and scaffolds, and work at heights.
  • Ability to travel to remote job sites not accessible by public transportation, and if applicable, a valid driver's license.

  • Bluebeam / Sketchup - Preferred
  • AutoCAD / Revit / Navisworks - Preferred
  • WUFI / THERM / WINDOW - Preferred
Key Responsibilities

Primary Work:

  • Initiate compliance peer reviews of roofing and waterproofing systems, windows, curtain walls, wall cladding, and other building components.
  • Supervise work by technicians and draftsmen and others assisting project team.
  • Able to work on routine projects independently.
  • Act as project manager for small, straightforward assignments and serve as project engineer to assist project manager in engineering, budgeting, scheduling, and client communication for more complex assignments.
  • Develop letters, reports, drawings, specifications, and proposals with moderate guidance.
  • Conduct field investigations and on-site construction monitoring.
  • Skilled at time management.
  • Able to present to client groups and professional organisations.
  • Perform field investigation and water leakage testing of roofing and waterproofing systems, windows, curtain walls, and other building components.
  • Pursue professional activities to gain professional recognition.

Client Engagement:

  • Able to be responsible for direct client contact within context of existing work.

Health & Safety

  • Comply with the H&S Policy and applicable regulatory and company H&S rules and requirements.
  • Responsible for assessing risk of his/her work activities, taking corrective action and preventative actions as necessary, properly using and maintaining assigned control measures and using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Responsible for immediately reporting all incident (injuries, illnesses, near misses, spills etc…), hazardous conditions and emergencies to his/her supervisor.
  • Report to his/her supervisor any conditions or practices that are either unsafe or that may adversely impact the environment, to ensure prompt resolution of potential hazards.
  • Participate in H&S training programs and take personal responsibility for his/her own safety.
  • Actively support the organisation’s efforts to meet or exceed H&S goals and plans.

The Facade & Building Enclosures division in our North Shore Auckland office is growing, and we are currently looking for a graduate-level candidate. As a graduate-level hire, you will assist with design, evaluation, investigation, and design of repairs for new and existing buildings.

Key responsibilities
  • Performing compliance peer reviews of plans and specifications
  • Assisting during the construction administration/monitoring phases of projects
  • Drafting straightforward letters, field reports, and technical specifications with guidance and direct supervision for review/approval
  • Assisting staff in design, site investigations, and documentation of existing conditions
  • Informal public speaking with small group participation – e.g. job site meetings
  • Design of remedial repairs to existing building systems
  • Field investigation and water leakage testing of roofing and waterproofing systems, windows, curtain walls, wall claddings, and other building components
  • Component sampling of envelop components including wall claddings, windows, roofs, skylights, plaza waterproofing, and below-grade elements
