Why do I need an Architect – and how the heck do I choose the right one?
Firstly, you should understand why you need an Architect for your project to begin with.
An Architect should guide you through the design, planning and construction of your project. They should deliver value for money through the design they create, and they should provide you with peace of mind.
By choosing to engage an Architect for your project you are choosing to tap into a wealth of technical knowledge, skills and creativity that will endure and reward you well into the future.
Good architecture is about responding to the needs and individual requirements of their client, while considering the environment and landscape of the property. The decisions Architects make can have far-reaching effects. Buildings that are designed today will not only impact today’s communities but also have an impact on generations to come.
In fact, every Architect has a social responsibility to design buildings that not only consider the needs and enjoyment of the client, but also considers the specifics of the site and the surrounding environment and community.
When looking for an Architect, quality of work and reputation is very important. Choosing the right Architect may be the most important decision in a process that has a seemingly endless amount of decisions. Try to look for someone whose work you like and whom you believe you can work with. Seek recommendations from friends and contractors, and/or visit a website* that provides you with a list of Registered Architects and make sure to look at their reviews and references. It is important that the Architect you select can understand your needs and can adapt to your preferred architectural style.
On establishing a small list of suitable Architects, you are ready to begin the detailed process of finding the best fit for you. In doing so you’ll need to consider what is important to you and define selection criteria such as: Scope of service required, experience, personality fit etc.
What about from a larger commercial aspect – if you’re heading up a big development and need an Architect, then consider choosing an Architect from the same firm as other consultants you require. For example, at Kaizon we have Architects, Engineers and Quantity Surveyors whom often work together on projects. The benefits of selecting people who work together means you already know you’re hiring contractors who compliment each other’s work. A large building project has so many moving parts to it, it’s often hard to ensure everyone is working on the same page and towards the same goal. Therefore, you need to ensure you hire an Architect who is also capable of efficient communication and is effective when working with other people.
